How We Set Up a Managed Team in Three Weeks for Game Development Company

Client’s Goals

Avid gamers not only keep game industry afloat but also heavily contribute to its development. Guess how much do they spend on games annually? The expected investment reaches almost $138 billion in 2018. Such generous financial investments make game dev move forward at high speed – a variety of game scenarios, incredible graphics, upgraded game consoles and other accessories… Demand breeds supply.

Having excellent enterprise spirit, our client decided to create his own computer game. The game plot wasn’t complicated itself, however it would take much effort to hire a dedicated development team and manage it. And as it often happens, having an idea doesn’t necessarily mean having means to implement it. Lack of free time is always a big problem for entrepreneurs.

What Was the Business Challenge

The businessman didn’t want to bother with hiring and managing the development team, and he wanted to get the product done according to his requirements and high-quality standards.
The problem with hiring was that his company didn’t have in-house recruiters to complete the task. So, to start working on the game, they need to find good recruiters to hire skilled Unity developers. He rejected such complicated solution in favor of smarter and faster hiring without engaging extra people for project-based work.

So, how to hire a managed development team in Ukraine?

The Structure of the Team

Since the client needed to focus on his work, not on controlling dedicated Unity development team, he decided to hire a project manager who would be responsible for workflow and weekly reports. What concerns technical team, hiring two Unity developers and a QA specialist would be enough to create the game.

Unity is a popular technology in Ukraine, and we learned it from our own experience. We published the vacancy and just in three days we got a dozen of responses. After a pre-screening stage, we selected three Unity developers to show our client. He interviewed them and made two job offers.

Simultaneously, our recruiters were looking for project managers. Having found five relevant CVs, they scheduled interviews with the client. As a result, one person got a job in this game development project.

Hiring a QA engineer appeared to be ridiculously simple. The first candidate we showed our client seemed to be skilled enough and accepted a job offer at once.

Results

Managed team of four people consisting of one Middle and one Senior Unity developers, PM and QA was set up in just three weeks. To get such quick result we involved five recruiters: two in-house specialists and also we engaged three people working for us remotely. As a result, our client got an opportunity to start developing a game almost instantly, and avoid hiring extra recruiters as a part of the in-house team.
