Website Development Costs. Pricing and Salaries by Country

“The smartest business decision you can make is to hire qualified people. Bringing the right people on board saves you thousands, and your business will run smoothly and efficiently.”
Brian Tracy

No, no, you got it right. We’re going to talk about web development in this article. “Why do you start from the hiring issues?” you ask. The answer is pretty simple – your website will be your new worker. Almost no business can do without a website nowadays. It sells, it attracts clients, it generates traffic, it performs a lot of useful tasks. But only when it is hired/ developed properly.

What Influences Web Development Price?

Average people associate website only with design, but it’s only the top of the iceberg. A big part of work hides behind the issues of colors and details placement. That’s why simply knowing web design prices is only a small part of the whole web development cost.
What’s more, websites fall into categories according to their size, so it goes without saying that small business website cost is lower than the price of a large e-shop with hundreds of pages. So, besides the size, purpose also matters. As well as the time your web development team would spend on creating the necessary features.
The smallest web dev team consists of 3 people – web developer, web designer and quality assurance engineer. The price also include wages of these specialists.

To estimate the cost of making a website we deciced to go by two factors:
1) Size of the necessary website:
– landing page/simple website – one page website can be built in 2 weeks;
– medium website consisting of 30 pages takes about 1,5 to develop;
– large website of 40+ pages with custom design and payment system would be created in 3,5 months.
When it comes to creativity, it’s hard to measure it and define the workscope. So this division is rather conventional. But when you roughly know the number of pages, how much time it takes to develop them and hourly rates of web developer and web designer, you get a clue of web development pricing.

2) Location of a web development agency:
– USA;
– Europe;
– Asia;
– Australia.
Due to the advantages of the digital era you don’t necessarily need to hire local specialist, you can find developers in any part of the world. But it’s obvious that different regions have different web development rates.

Web Development Cost in the USA

Web development pricing there is among the highest in the world even despite the fact that salaries vary greatly from region to region. The average cost of web design together with web development there range from $2,000 to ad infinitum – the only limit is your budget.

Simple website – $2-4k
Medium website – $5k-35k
Large custom design website – $20k-1mln+

Web Development Cost in Europe

This is the most diverse region in our list with western part with exorbitant web design cost and Eastern Europe where the prices for web development are more attractive. Let’s take a landing page, for example. The average price to build a website like this starts from $1000 (two times lower than in the USA!) and swells up to $4000.

Simple website – $1k-3,5k
Medium website – $3,5k-20k
Large custom design website – $18k-1mln+

Web Development Cost in Asia

What makes this region a popular outsourcing destination is low web development rates. They are two times lower than in Europe, and four times cheaper than in the USA. But beware of cheapness, low prices can be the first sign that something goes wrong with this web development agency.

Simple website – $400-600
Medium website – $800-3k
Large custom design website – $4k-1mln+

Web Development Cost in Australia

And back to reality from Asian price pit – Australia keeps the pace with the US, and local web dev agencies work for almost the same hourly rates as their American competitors. The price is also influenced by region’s issue of tech skill shortage. Local businesses often choose nearshore web development services offered by Malaysia or Philippines.

Simple website – $2-4k
Medium website – $4,5k-35k
Large custom design website – $20k-1mln+

Web Development Rates in Different Countries

People are always curious about salaries so the second part of the article is dedicate to wages of web development team members. We will learn web developer hourly rates in different countries as well their annual income so that you can choose where to hire employees.

We compared East and West Coast, and the difference in sums can rocket up to 15k annually.
Entry-level web developer in New York gets about 66k. However, the closer you get to the Silicon Valley, the higher is web developer rate. Beginner web developer from San Francisco receives around $75k, while salary of a senior web developer there is $87k, and the sum can reach even $150k threshold.
The services of a junior web designer will cost you $54k per year while the experience and knowledge of a senior expert come at the price of $62k.
It is worth to mention that the USA has positive wages growth index – this year wages have increased by 2%. Why is this important? If you have a long-term web development project, it means that you will have to significantly raise wages constantly in order to hire, motivate and retain employees.

The thing is that the West of Europe is suffering from skill shortage and lack of qualified IT specialists. Here you can read about the crisis in Spain. And on the contrary, Eastern Europe boasts of a high level of tech education and a large number of graduates.

Scandinavian countries
An average web developer in Sweden gets about $50k annually.Their Norwegian fellows work on the same terms, but in some cases the salary there goes up to $60k per year. Danish employers pay their workers $6000-7500 ($72-90k a year).
Web designer hourly rates are lower, so the average salary of Scandinavian web designer ranges from $4000 to $4600.

36,000 is a number of people living in Liechtenstein. The same number of students graduates from Ukrainian tech universities every year. About one-tenth (~3000) of them deal with front-end which is an important part of web development. Probably due to a large number of specialists web development cost here isn’t that high – $3500-4000 per month. One can easily hire a Ukrainian web designer for $2500-3000.

Lots of business giants as well as medium-size companies prefer to address local specialists because of a low cost of offshore web development here. Indeed, the cost of making a website drops down drastically there in comparison with the rest of the countries.
Hiring a Chinese web developer would cost you $600 (reaching $1-2,5k depending on the region) monthly. Indian and Philipino web developers receive $400-500 for the same period of time.

The annual income of a web designer in Australia is $50k and can reach the point of about $54k. Depending on the skillset and experience, the price of web developer’s services varies from $40k to $63k per year.
